Traveling

I’m not a big fan of traveling, especially for work purposes. There was a time before I had a family when I was traveling quite a bit, and seeing different parts of the county was exciting. However, since “settling down”, I’ve tried to avoid work travel as much as possible. I guess that’s why I’m attending a conference this week for the first time since 2007. Being a father of four, I’m hardly ever alone, never mind alone with my thoughts. So, today’s travel day left me a lot of time to stop, watch and think. Following are some random thoughts I had today.

  • O’Hare airport, NFL Sunday, Saints are in town for the biggest game of the Bears season so far. On TVs throughout the concourse: Giants/Eagles.
  • I’m probably never as judgmental about people’s appearances as when I’m sitting in my assigned airplane seat, watching people walk down the aisle and trying to determine who I don’t want sitting next to me for the next two hours. As shallow and horrible as that is, I can’t seem to help myself.
  • I feel bad when people carry my luggage for me, even when it’s their job to do so.
  • My flights changed gates three times today, and never once did anybody at the previously scheduled gate announce the change. Are they trying to get people to miss their flights so they can accommodate the standby passengers who’ve previously missed their flights? Who’s in charge of gate scheduling at airports, the same folks who borrow money to pay down the US debt?
  • I love walking around and finding new places.
  • I still hate eating alone.
  • Nothing depreciates in value quicker than a boarding pass once it’s been scanned.
  • Sunday night football starts really late when you’re on the east coast.
  • The Washington Monument has a bunch of dark scaffolding all around it. When you’re far away, it looks really weird, like you’re in an alternate universe where everything in Washington is evil and all the monuments are black instead of white.
  • My wife and I had a FaceTime conversation, and even after we ran out of things to talk about, we stayed on the call for a very long time. Neither of us really wanted to hang up.
  • I went to a restaurant tonight that didn’t have any drinks on the menu except wine (I had water). I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Their stuffed shrimp was marvelous, though.
  • I still don’t know where I’m supposed to be at 8:30 tomorrow morning. If I got an e-mail telling me, I don’t remember seeing it. I guess I’ll just wander around outside the conference rooms until I see one with my name tag or something.
